*** The incident inspired two excellent movies:  The Great Man starred Jose Ferrer as a journalist assigned to write an affectionate remembrance on Herb Fuller, a radio personality modeled on Godfrey, only to discover that Fuller was, as Wikipedia puts it, an “alcoholic, womanizing, unethical egomaniac.”  A Face in the Crowd starred Andy Griffith as Larry “Lonesome” Rhodes, a petty criminal from a small southern town who is discovered in a county jail by a talent scout (Patricia Neal) and becomes a TV star, only to fall after a technician leaves a microphone live, allowing a national audience to hear its idol refer to them as idiots, morons and guinea pigs.
